Ellensburg School Board seeks input on nutrition and physical fitness policy
Daily Record-News

The Ellensburg School Board is seeking public comment on a nutrition and physical fitness policy introduced on Wednesday for a first reading. The policy, aimed at preventing childhood obesity, was drafted by a committee led by food services director Patrick Garmong. Garmong has been invited to present to the school board at a study session on May 22.The policy addresses nutritional quality in schools and physical activities, as well as introducing the idea of school health councils that would help develop and implement these policies.Board members Jennifer Hackett and Jonathan Leonard voiced their concerns with the policies, particularly the ones about rewards, celebrations and fundraising.Under the policy, food and beverages used as rewards would have to meet nutrition standards, and celebrations in classrooms would be limited to once per month and include only food and beverages that meet nutrition standards.
