Above all, I am drinking smoothies for the nutritional benefits as itâs a quick and easy way to get calcium or fruits in my diet.Smoothies can be deceiving because many are loaded with sugar and calories, so when I am making a smoothie, I focus on nutrition. If you buy commercial smoothies, they can easily pack 400 to 450 calories each, which is almost a meal.I never add sugar. Instead, I try to use ripe fruit. If itâs still not sweet enough, I use agave syrup as that has a lower glycemic index, fewer calories and is healthier.As my husband said after tasting my recipes: âThese are healthy smoothies, not fun smoothies.â True. But they are still tasty, particularly the cherry berry cinnamon chia and the blueberry banana.I make all my recipes with unsweetened 30-calorie vanilla almond milk because it is so much lower in calories than traditional milk and has no sugar.
