Rutgers: Choosing from the menu: cash or nutrition?


The email query was facetious. Its author knew I was working on a column -- this column -- about the Board of Education decision to remove Greenwich High School from the National School Lunch Program.The query refers to the BOE defense of its decision, articulated by vice chair Jennifer Dayton: "I believe it is possible and beneficial to devise a Greenwich solution -- one that offers choices that will allow students to take charge of maintaining healthy lives at GHS."Dayton chaired the board's June 17 meeting in the absence of Barbara O'Neill. The BOE's unanimous vote to withdraw GHS from the NSLP was driven by new NSLP nutrition requirements. As in the past, the board also opted out of Connecticut's Healthy Food Certification.The board's NSLP decision affects only Greenwich High School.
