Vet check means mushers are one step closer to starting 2011 Yukon Quest

Whitehorse. Mushers will have a four-hour layover at Braeburn, ensuring that each team has more than enough time to be looked over by veterinarians before continuing the remaining 900 miles to Fairbanks. The extra time will be especially important due to the volume of mushers coming into the checkpoint. Braeburn also is the first checkpoint on the Yukon Quest 300. With another 23 mushers running the shorter race, that could mean almost 50 teams at the checkpoint at once. Most of the Quest veterinarians are part of the International Sled Dog Veterinary Medical Association, an organization that is a proponent of research on sled dogs, their nutrition, standards of care and physiology. At the Whitehorse check, a research team from Cornell University was collecting muscle samples for study.Head Veterinarian Alan Hallman said the standard of care on the Quest has increased each year, in large part to research projects.“It gives us, as vets, more options for diagnosis and treatment and just makes us a better team,” he said.It wasn’t just research moving things along. He also credited excellent care on the part of the mushers.“That increases every year. As knowledge gets better, they’re right on top of it for the most part.
