Indianapolis Star

Following an ongoing national conversation about religious freedom, one Jeffersonville inmate is suing claiming he was denied the right to practice his religion.Steven W. Bowers, a Messianic Jew, is suing the Clark County Sheriff's Department and Sheriff Jamey Noel, claiming they denied him the right to observe a kosher diet.Noel denied the allegations Monday, saying all inmates are given a special diet upon request and after being interviewed per protocol.Bowers, who alleges the Sheriff's office and Noel violated his constitutional rights, filed the five-page handwritten suit in the Southern District of Indiana last week. The claim also says he was forced to breathe smoke after another inmate set a fire.Messianic Jews combine Christianity â particularly the Christian belief that Jesus is the Messiah â with elements of Judaism and the Jewish tradition.
