Clark County inmate sues Sheriff over kosher diet

Following an ongoing national conversation about religious freedom, one Jeffersonville inmate is suing claiming he was denied the right to practice his religion.Steven W. Bowers, a Messianic Jew, is suing the Clark County Sheriff's Department and Sheriff Jamey Noel, claiming they denied him the right to observe a kosher diet.Noel denied the allegations Monday, saying all inmates are given a special diet upon request and after being interviewed per protocol.Bowers, who alleges the Sheriff's office and Noel violated his constitutional rights, filed the five-page handwritten suit in the Southern District of Indiana last week. The claim also says he was forced to breathe smoke after another inmate set a fire.Messianic Jews combine Christianity â particularly the Christian belief that Jesus is the Messiah â with elements of Judaism and the Jewish tradition.
