Karl Lagerfeld, the fashion icon and creative director at Chanel and Fendi, was known as much for his signature look — a white ponytail, dark sunglasses, and black jacket — as for being an incredibly prolific designer. But his death on February 19 is a chance to reflect on another aspect of the 85-year-old’s legacy: His unique contribution to dieting psychology. Lagerfeld, who was born in Germany, liked to say that he woke up one morning — November 1, 2000, to be exact — and decided he was no longer happy with his physique.
